The Kelpies at Sunset - Original Artwork

The Kelpies at Sunset - Original Artwork

This hand-painted original artwork celebrates one of Scotland’s most recognisable modern landmarks, the magnificent Kelpies at The Helix in Falkirk.

Standing an incredible 30 metres (100 feet) tall, The Kelpies are the world’s largest equine sculptures. Created by Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, the two towering steel horse heads were inspired by the Clydesdale horses that played an important role in Scotland’s industrial and agricultural heritage, particularly the horses that once hauled barges along the canals. Each sculpture weighs more than 300 tonnes!

Their name comes from the legendary kelpie, a shape-shifting water spirit from Scottish folklore, traditionally said to inhabit lochs and rivers. These mysterious creatures were often described as powerful horses, giving the sculptures an extra touch of Scottish magic and mythology.

I wanted to capture the incredible presence of The Kelpies while celebrating what makes them so special. Their striking silhouettes have become an iconic part of the Falkirk landscape and a much-loved destination for visitors from Scotland and around the world.

Whether The Kelpies hold a special place in your heart, remind you of a favourite trip to Falkirk, or you simply love Scotland’s extraordinary landmarks, I hope this painting brings a little piece of Scottish magic into your home.
