The Duke of Wellington - Original Artwork

This hand-painted original artwork celebrates one of Glasgow’s most recognisable and much-loved landmarks, the Duke of Wellington statue, standing proudly outside the Gallery of Modern Art in Royal Exchange Square.

The statue has become an iconic symbol of Glasgow, not only for its grand equestrian design, but for the famous traffic cone that has become a rather permanent part of the Duke’s appearance! Since the 1980s, Glasgow’s legendary sense of humour has seen locals repeatedly place cones on the Duke’s head, turning the historic monument into one of the city’s most photographed tourist attractions.

I wanted to capture the Duke in a way that celebrates both sides of Glasgow, its rich history and grand architecture, alongside the cheeky humour and personality that make the city so special. The cool blue tones against the deep, moody background bring a dramatic feel to this familiar Glasgow scene, while the little red-and-white cone adds that unmistakable touch of Glaswegian character.
